The participants in the first survey were invited to a reinvestigation, which was started early in 1980 and completed in 1984. Since the first investigation 98 men had died and 94 men were not eligible for other reasons (had moved out of the Uppsala region). Of the 2130 men eligible, 1860 men aged around 60 years participated in this second survey (participation rate 87.3%).
The investigation procedures were similar to that at age 50. All participants underwent a minor investigation including measurement of fasting blood glucose, blood pressures, weight and height, and a medical questionnaire. A subpopulation was selected for further investigations including an intravenous glucose tolerance test.
